  1. Welcome
  2. Getting to the Sapphire Coast
  3. When to visit

Escape to the Sapphire Coast and you’ll find glittering beaches hemmed in by emerald-green hills, sparkling lakes, caves and national parks.

White-sand beaches and aquamarine waters hug the Sapphire Coast, creating countless opportunities to take panoramic photos of this dazzling New South Wales coastline. The region is perfect for everyone from surfers to hikers, and world-class seafood makes it an ideal destination for foodies, too. In short, it’s a close-to-nature experience with all the creature comforts.

The Sapphire Coast stretches from Bermagui in the north to Eden in the south, a coastline of about 90km (56mi). There are several seaside villages in between, so driving is the best way to explore the region.

  • Bermagui is located a five-hour drive south of Sydney
  • Eden is located a six-hour drive south of Sydney

Make a road trip of it on this six-day Sydney to Sapphire Coast itinerary.

The Sapphire Coast experiences a temperate climate that makes enjoying nature possible all year long. Spring is a beautiful time to visit; the weather is great for outdoor adventures and whales begin to migrate past the coast between August and November.

  • High season: Summer (December to February)
  • Low season: Winter (June to August)

Top things to do on the Sapphire Coast

Montague Island, near Narooma, New South Wales © Destination NSW

Swim with playful seals

Just outside of the Sapphire Coast lies an unforgettable wildlife experience. Take a tour to Montague Island to hop into the water with playful (and sometimes mischievous) seals that will splash, spin, blow bubbles and put on a show.

Horse Head Rock, Bermagui, New South Wales © Destination NSW

Snap a photo at Horse Head Rock

Add to the #horseheadrock hashtags on Instagram by snapping a selfie in front of this iconic attraction, said to be about 500 million years old. For the best vantage point, walk along the elevated track between Camel Rock and Murunna Point.

Spot a whale migration

You’ll find many great vantage points to see whales in the waters off Bermagui, Tathra and Merimbula as the giant mammals make their migration to Antarctica between September and November. Spot them from shore or book a whale watching cruise.

Ben Boyd National Park, Green Cape, New South Wales © Destination NSW

Walk from Light to Light

This multi-day walk begins at Boyds Tower and winds its way to Green Cape Lighthouse, passing from heathland to tea-tree groves and towering red-rock platforms. Spot seals, seabirds and whales on one of the best walks of the south coast.

Blue Pool, Bermagui, New South Wales © Destination NSW

Take a dip in a Blue Pool

Bermagui’s famous Blue Pool, rated as one of the top eight ocean rock pools in the world, is set like a precious gem into the coastline. Enjoy a swim or snorkel in the natural sea pool, then spot whales from the viewing platform (in season).

Captain Sponge's Magical Oyster Tour, Pambula River, New South Wales © Destination NSW

Taste ocean-fresh oysters

The Sapphire Coast produces some of the world’s best oysters due to the fact they are grown in pristine nutrient-rich waterways surrounded by national parks. Try the prized delicacy at local oyster shacks, top restaurants and on tasting tours.

Bundadung Trail Network, Tathra, New South Wales © Destination NSW

Shred mountain bike trails

Challenge yourself on some of the best mountain-bike trails in the country such as the Bundadung & Fire Shed Trails near Tathra. For less intensity but no less fun, hire an e-bike or join a tour to effortlessly cycle the coast.
