Step into the ancient heart of the world’s oldest rainforest and feel your everyday worries drift away with the mist that washes over this lush oasis. The Daintree Rainforest in Queensland's Cairns and Great Barrier Reef region is well known for its healing properties. Step under the canopy and you’ll feel – not just see – why. Water gushes over rocks covered in brilliant-green moss. Native birds call to each other from the deep-green foliage. Exotic insects whirr in the dark-green undergrowth. From the Echo Point lookout in Katoomba you can see for miles across a deep valley blanketed in rich green bushland reaching to dramatic sun-drenched cliffs. A waterfall cascades over the distant rocks; in front of you, wisps of cloud hover above the ever-growing green shoots, while native wildlife rustles below. It’s not surprising that many seek balance among the native bushland that encompasses Australia’s national parks. Here, in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains National Park, a two-hour drive from Sydney, the air is fresh and the serenity absolute.
Feel the calming effects of seeing native wildlife

Out of the grassy undergrowth, she emerges; a small marsupial known as a quokka. Daintily, she picks up a bright green kernel and begins to nibble. Here on bush-covered Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth in Western Australia, quokkas thrive; and so do the humans who meet them. There is plenty of research to show the calming benefits of interacting with nature and her creatures, but quokkas offer their own kind of magic.
