Watch baby sea

turtles hatch

In one of nature's most precious displays, baby turtles begin to hatch and scamper toward the sea in Queensland. Visit Mon Repos Turtle Centre to embark on a nightly tour of the beach to witness the first steps (or rather, scurries) of tiny turtles.

Swim with giant

whale sharks

Gentle, and giant. Whale sharks are a marvel to behold, and Australia is lucky enough to have hundreds gather near Ningaloo Reef every year. Snorkelling with them is a completely wild experience; the whales are not lured, fed or disturbed during their visit.

Snorkel with a kaleidescope of cuttlefish

One of the world's most unusual wildlife experiences comes in the form of colour-changing cuttlefish. Tens of thousands of these aquatic chameleons come to South Australia's shallow waters and put on a brilliant show for snorkellers, rippling in shades of blue, orange, red and purple.

Attend a cosy

winter festival

Aussies warm up the winter with quirky festivals. And when we say quirky, we mean it. Costume competitions, totem burning and pagan-inspired feasts are all on the menu. Tasmania's Dark Mofo is perhaps the most peculiar of them all – complete with a nude swim in the ocean.

Play in Australia's

snow fields

You might be surprised to learn that Australia gets snow, and skiing is just the beginning. Traverse the slopes via dog sled, snowshoe your way across beautiful hills and spot wombats and wallabies dusted in snow.

Get caught in a carpet

of red crabs

Christmas Island – a beautiful outpost reached via flight from Perth – becomes a moving carpet of red each year. Triggered by the first rainfall of the wet season, a migration of millions of crabs begins from the forest to the ocean.
