Guide to Albany and Denmark
Perched on the edge of the Southern Ocean, Albany and Denmark are places of staggering coastal beauty and historic significance.
Picture a place of turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, where granite headlands curve gracefully to the sea. Cliffs are pounded by relentless swells, yet calm bays once sheltered soldiers departing for war. In the southern tip of Western Australia, Albany and Denmark boast unique forests, carpets of wildflowers and vineyards producing fine wines. It’s little wonder this is a special place to the Menang Noongar Traditional Owners.
Top things to do in Albany and Denmark
Explore the rocky coastline
Just outside Albany, Torndirrup National Park protects a wild coastline, where the Southern Ocean pounds the rocky cliffs. Overhanging lookouts and boardwalks provide epic views of natural wonders including Natural Bridge and the Gap.
Visit the National Anzac Centre
Some 41,000 troops departed from Albany for war in 1914, and the National Anzac Centre commemorates them. Enjoy stunning ocean views before assuming the identity of a serviceman or woman as your interactive visit follows their war journey.
Bask on pristine beaches
White sand, rocky headlands and turquoise water mean the region has some of the best beaches in Australia. Families will love Middleton Beach, and don’t miss Little Beach, where impressive granite boulders sit atop a secluded stretch of sand.
Visit Australia’s last whaling station
Albany is on the migration route for several species of whales and in 1978 the station was the last in Australia to stop hunting. Today, Albany’s Historic Whaling Station is dedicated to whales and the historic industry with interactive exhibits.
Hike the Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock
You’ll feel like you’re standing at the edge of the world on the Granite Skywalk, which extends over a massive outcrop called Castle Rock. It’s a steep three-kilometre (two-mile) hike, but the views from this engineering marvel are breathtaking.
Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk
Get sky-high at the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk, which is suspended 40 metres (130 feet) in the air. Marvel at the amazing views of towering tingle trees, or keep your feet on the ground as you walk the nature trail.
Sip cool climate wines
Albany is located within the Great Southern Wine Region, known for varieties including chardonnay, riesling and pinot noir. Stop by for a cool climate wine tasting at Singlefile Wines, Forest Hill Vineyard and Oranje Tractor to name a few.
Sample a drop of the local brew
If you prefer beer and spirits, Albany and Denmark have you covered. Beside Princess Royal Harbour, Great Southern Distilling Co creates the award-winning Limeburners whisky. Local beer is brewed up at Boston Brewing Co and Wilson Brewing Company.
Explore Denmark’s Greens Pool
Denmark is a village 40 minutes west of Albany, and the gateway to William Bay National Park. Take a dip at Greens Pool, sheltered by giant granite boulders. Shimmy through a narrow rock gap to Elephant Rocks, another turquoise water wonderland.
Take an incredible coastal hike
The Bibbulmun Track is a 1,000-kilometre (621-mile) hiking track from Perth to Albany. Sections can easily be tackled near Albany, with coastal vistas and, if the season is right, whales and wildflowers. Alternatively, try these shorter hikes.
Take a look into history
In 1826, Major Lockyer arrived aboard Brig Amity, making Albany the first European settlement in Western Australia. Visit the replica ship and historical buildings in the Museum of the Great Southern, which also showcases Menang Noongar culture.
