Day 1: Adelaide
The South Australian capital delivers history and adventure in spades. It’s also one of the most exciting Australian cities for food.
Explore a record-breaking market
With more than 70 traders under one roof, the Adelaide Central Market is one of the largest undercover fresh produce markets in the Southern Hemisphere. Follow the lead of locals and begin your day here with an excellent coffee.
Hit the museums
North Terrace is often called Adelaide’s ‘Cultural Boulevard’, where South Australia's history lives. Not only in museums and the South Australian Art Gallery, but in memorials, statues, plaques – and the many splendid historic buildings.
Discover Australian designers
When it’s time for some retail therapy, make a beeline for Rundle Mall, a car-free thoroughfare of shops, entertainment and public works of art. Australia's first pedestrian mall, today it’s packed with more than 700 retail stores.
Get a taste of Adelaide's foodie scene
End your day at one of Adelaide’s Halal restaurants. Pondok Daun serves authentic Indonesian cuisine on Currie Street, while Marrakech Moroccan serves tasty dishes in a colourfully decorated space.
Day 2: Glenelg
Spend the morning in the sea, swimming with dolphins. Then grab the best view in Adelaide from the roof of Adelaide Oval.
Visit the locals' favourite beach
Glenelg is Adelaide's most popular beach destination and it's easy (and fun) to access by the tram from the city – it’s just a 20-minute ride. Grab a coffee while you walk along the foreshore.
Feel the thrill of swimming with dolphins
Head out with Temptation Sailing in search of wild dolphins. Temptation Sailing operates a variety of different cruising options depending on the time of day you visit, from wild dolphin swim experiences to twilight sailings.
Get a taste of Turkey in Glenelg
For lunch, the seaside suburb’s Ottoman Grill explores the flavours of Turkey, featuring South Australia’s finest produce. Relax and savour the aroma of vegetable and Halal meats grilling over open flames.
Climb a sporting stadium
Another unforgettable adventure awaits back in the city at the iconic Adelaide Oval. A tour of the famous sporting grounds is eye-opening, especially if you attempt the RoofClimb. Enjoy picturesque views of the city and a burst of adrenaline as you climb.
Savour multicultural Adelaide
When it's time for dinner, enjoy casual Malay and Indonesian specialities at Warong in Rundle Mall. Signature dishes here range from rich nasi goreng and chicken satay to delicious Hainan chicken rice.
Day 3: Adelaide to Adelaide Hills
Historic villages, native wildlife and farm-fresh produce draw visitors to the Adelaide Hills. This day trip destination is full of surprises.
Be dazzled by panoramic views
The orchards and historic villages of the Adelaide Hills are just a 20-minute drive from the city centre. Take in panoramic views at Mount Lofty Summit, then head to the beautiful Mount Lofty botanic gardens.
Meet native wildlife
You can get up close and personal with iconic Aussie wildlife at the award-winning Cleland Wildlife Park. Many animals are free-roaming across the grounds, creating wonderful opportunities to see koalas, kangaroos and echidnas going about their daily life.
Explore historic Hahndorf
Continue to explore Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. Browse beautiful galleries and gift shops, then pause for a lunch of delicious Indian dishes at The Mustard Seed.
Visit a family-owned farm
Hahndorf's family-owned Beerenberg Farm is an absolute must-visit in the Adelaide Hills. Stock up on a fantastic range of jams, preserves and farm-fresh produce, then hit the patch and pick your own strawberries (November to April).
Day 4: Adelaide to Kangaroo Island
Take the ferry or a short flight to Kangaroo Island, a wildlife playground where koalas, sea lions and fur seals steal the show.
Be amazed by playful sea lions
Make your first stop Seal Bay, where Australian sea lions frolic on the sand. These animals are completely wild with no enclosures, and you’ll be taken into the heart of the colony with experienced guides.
Marvel at Vivonne Bay
Departing Seal Bay, make a stop at sparkling Vivonne Bay to admire the crystal-clear water and pick up lunch provisions from the General Store. There’s no other place to eat between here and the west coast, your next destination.
Feel the force of nature
Flinders Chase National Park is a dramatic wilderness area with iconic landmarks such as the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Learn the history of the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse – it has saved many boats from becoming shipwrecks in these wild waters.
Savour South Australian seafood
Finally, indulge in a seafood feast at Kangaroo Island Fresh Seafoods. You can eat in the restaurants, or take away fish and chips, burgers, fresh prawns and oysters, and other local delicacies.
Day 5: Kangaroo Island
Get a taste for Kangaroo Island through its seafood and honey. Then channel your inner adventurer zipping down dunes.
Glide down a golden sand dune
Continue your Kangaroo Island adventure with a multitude of outdoor, action-based activities. Ride quad bikes through winding bush land trails, hire sandboards or toboggans and surf the massive sand dunes at Little Sahara.
Learn why fresh is best
Craving more seafood after all that action? There’s no better place on the island to devour oysters, marron, abalone and King George whiting all in one place than The Oyster Farm Shop in the picturesque town of American River.
See what the buzz is about
Kangaroo Island is home to the world's oldest bee sanctuary and the only pure strain of Ligurian bees on the planet. Visit Island Beehive or Clifford's Honey Farm to learn about these remarkable creatures and taste delectable honey products.
